This Young Adult Novel That Tackles Black Lives Matter Is Exactly What We Need

Image may be NSFW.

There have never been any strict rules on the young adult genre. As long as the protagonist is a teen, everything else is pretty much fair game. Pregnancy and drug use? Bring it on. A psychotic stalker obsessed with a group of teenage girls? Let’s make it a torturous teen television show. A boy in an abusive adoptive household who learns he’s a wizard? International, best-selling franchise.

When my Granny would let my preteen self loose in that section of the bookstore under the guise that it was age-appropriate, I felt like I was pulling the biggest scam. From my perspective, she was unknowingly footing the bill for books with super scandalous plot devices. But what I always loved about the young adult genre was that it acknowledged that young people have complex lives that address heavy issues, too. Given that commitment, it was only a matter of time before someone in the contemporary era used the genre to explore the Black Lives Matter movement.

As of today, you can read The Hate U Give, a new novel written by Angie Thomas. It’s about a Black teenager named Starr Carter who is dating a white boy, code-switching between cultures at her elite private school and violence-riddled neighborhood, and witnessing the murder of her friend Khalil at the hands of police. The 16-year-old is conflicted on whether or not to testify against the officer who killed Khalil, a decision that puts her own young life in danger.

The story has already been picked up to be turned in movie by Fox 2000/Temple Hill Productions. Not bad at all for Thomas’s first novel. Documenting the current fight for Black liberation is well underway in film and television with documentaries like 13th and scripted series like Shots Fired. But The Hate U Give is finally bringing the movement to young people in the imaginative sense, and it’s exactly the kind of story we need right now. Not only does it feature a female protagonist with a dynamic story line, it brilliantly weaves in contemporary issues and pop culture.

This book could very well usher in my personal return to a genre that started my love for literature. I may even revisit some of my urban fiction favorites while I’m at it.

Could Contract Negotiations Get In The Way Of Modern Family's Next Season?

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

The eighth season of Modern Family wrapped production last Friday, but sources are reporting that the the ABC comedy could face delays leading into its ninth and (maybe) final season. Contract negotiations haven't yet begun with the show's adult cast, but pay has been a contentious issue for the series before, and we're sure that neither the actors nor production team want a repeat of that performance.

In 2012, the show's adult actors and production team came to a head when the cast wasn't satisfied with their pay. It led to a canceled table read and a lawsuit. But things settled down and the show went on, as is the M.O. for the business.

This time around, the issue of pay may delay the show again. The Hollywood Reporter notes that there is conflict between the show's network, ABC, and the sitcom's producers, 20th Century Fox Television.

"In the case of Modern Family, that price tag is hefty, thanks in large part to the already-rich salaries being paid to the award-winning ensemble," notes THR. "In its eighth season, which is now airing, the stars of Steve Levitan (who is directing the season finale) and Christopher Lloyd’s hit half-hour are said to be making roughly $350,000 per episode as well as getting a cut of the series’ profits. They will no doubt demand considerably more to continue."

Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Eric Stonestreet, Jessie Tyler Ferguson, and Ed O’Neill are coming to the table with a slew of awards and critical acclaim to their names. However, as Uproxx notes, the show hasn't won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series in the past two years. Despite that, Modern Family remains ABC's highest-rated show. That may be enough for the cast to get their way — and their raises. The negotiations don't start until May, so there's plenty of time for each party to come to an agreement before anything gets pushed back.

This announcement comes hot on the heels of news from The Big Bang Theory. According to Variety, stars Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Kunal Nayyar, and Simon Helberg make about $1 million per episode. Take note, Modern Family cast. While it's not expected that the stars of ABC's comedy will get close to that, Uproxx adds that the starting number for O'Neill and his crew is hovering around $500,000 per episode.

Stila Just Launched The Coolest Holographic Eyeshadow — & It's Fit For A Mermaid

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

We're only two months into the new year and we’ve already seen some crazy beauty trends, but nothing has been as prevalent as unicorn makeup — or just about anything else that's of the holographic, iridescent, and rainbow variation. (Not that we are complaining or anything.) Why stick to one color when you can have all of them swirled together into one product, right? The latest from Stila Cosmetics, however, takes it up a notch — its Magnificent Metals Glitter & Glow shadows are fit for a mermaid.

At first, it looks like the sparkly formulas are similar to the original Stila Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow — which, when we first saw 'em, absolutely blew our minds. But much to our delight, we've discovered they are none other than shade extensions of our favorite liquid formula from the brand's Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow range — with an added metallic twist you'd from the OGs. And the new mermaid-inspired hues are out-of-this-world bright, loaded with golden flecks, and have the kind of holographic magic that beg for your attention.

Among the additions, you'll find Sunset Cove, a pink hue with gilded glitter; Sea Siren, an iridescent fuschia and teal; and Into the Blue, a soft purple with green and blue shimmer. Similar to the other Stila formulas we adore — like the Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick and Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner, for example — all three are impossibly long-lasting and budge-proof. Even better, the smallest dab of pigment goes a long way, so it'll last you well into the summer time. What's more, you can scoop up every single shade tomorrow on Stila’s site (and at Sephora too, come April). Time to start your hourly countdown.

Why Is Jack At A Bar With A Woman Who Is NOT Rebecca On This Is Us?

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

One could rename This Is Us a plethora of things. This Is Sad, and This Is Heavy, a re but two examples I came up with just now. Today, however, I'd like to rename it something else: This Is Not Okay.

The NBC drama broke everyone's heart when it revealed that Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) would not live to see his kids enter adulthood. That sucked, considering Jack is pretty much the best television dad of all time. It's not just parenting that Jack is so damn good at: he's also a wonderful, dedicated husband to Rebecca (Mandy Moore). Or... is he? A new photo from upcoming penultimate episode "What Now?" — scheduled to air on March 7 — puts Jack in a position that should make everyone who ships Jack and Rebecca a tad suspicious. Does Jack hook up with someone who isn't his wife in an upcoming episode?

When we last left Jack and Rebecca in Flashback Land, the couple had a huge fight over the reveal that Rebecca used to date her bandmate Ben (Sam Trammell), whom she is scheduled to go on tour with. Jack then goes to the place where he and Rebecca typically spend Valentine's Day and orders a drink, despite his problematic relationship with alcohol. While Jack's renewed taste for hard liquor upset fans, so might another image of Jack at the bar. In a new photo, Jack is seen at the bar with Heather ( How To Get Away With Murder 's Megan West), Miguel's (Jon Huertas) assistant.

Image may be NSFW.

Photo: Paul Drinkwater/NBC

Am I crazy, or are Jack and Heather making eyes at one another?!? THIS IS NOT OKAY, THIS IS US!

Before you think I'm completely paranoid here — after all, it's not like they're making out at the bar — I want to point out that the show has definitely dropped clues about Heather being involved in some sort of cheating situation. During her first appearance in "The Best Washing Machine In The Whole World," Heather seemingly flirts with Jack by adjusting his shirt, even telling him that his "wife should have caught that." Later, in "I Call Marriage," Jack accuses Miguel of cheating on his wife with the assistant, an accusation that Miguel vehemently denies. Well, what if Heather's appearances were actually a heavy dose of foreshadowing? Except, in this case, it wasn't Miguel that cheated, but Jack?

I'm already crying.

It's pretty damn devastating to think that "good guy" Jack could do that to Rebecca. Maybe Jack will be confronted with the opportunity to cheat, and choose to turn Heather down. The episode is called "What Now?," after all, which could imply that Jack needs to make a serious choice about his future relationship with his wife.

I'm hoping that This Is Us won't ruin our beloved Rebecca and Jack by throwing in a sad cheating storyline... but also well aware that This Is Us doesn't really care about keeping us happy. Stay strong, my friends: I fear the penultimate episode of This Is Us will be a doozy.

Kim Kardashian's Tennis Lesson Photo With North Is Too Much To Handle

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Kim Kardashian knows better than anyone that a picture is worth a thousands words — this is the genius behind Selfish, after all — so when she dropped this adorable photo on Twitter earlier today, she had to know the internet would kind of lose it. Simply captioned "Tennis Time," the photo shows the mother walking on a tennis court with her daughter, North West.

Let's dissect. North is wearing a little tennis dress and hat, looking like a pro as she struts in the sun. Kim is wearing a typical all-black ensemble, complete with high heeled boots. Only this fashion mogul could pull off something so impractical on the court. Her long hair sways in the breeze as she holds a tennis racket. Behind them, you might be able to spot multiple tennis balls, proving that the 3-year-old has been serving up a storm.

This photo just proves what we already knew: the mother-daughter duo is inseparable. When they're not chilling out at home or battling on the court, they're going to photoshoots together and snuggling behind the scenes. And when the two make public appearances, they often decide to match. It's safe to say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

We're glad North is getting into sports, because she's proven in the past to be quite an energetic handful. Earlier this month, Kim left the toddler alone for a few minutes and she ended up covering her room in purple paint.

"I go downstairs to get something for her brother for two seconds and she paints her room purple with nail polish," Kardashian says in a snapchat video she posted documenting the scene. When it came to cleaning it up, North decided to instead over the floor in paper towels.

This creativity will probably come in handy on the court.

Here's How Far $20 Will Get You At Your Favorite Grocery Stores

We're always trying to figure out new ways to get creative at the grocery store. Whether we're capitalizing on pantry staples, following meal plans, or comparing the same meal at different stores. But when we're actually at the supermarket hustling through the Sunday rush attempting to figure out what to make and if we really need half of the things that we've placed in our carts, it's tough to stick to whatever guidelines we originally walked in the door with. According to a Retale study, 20 percent of Millennials pay 0-$49 per grocery trip, while 37 percent pay $50-99, 35 percent pay $100-200, and 9 percent go over the $200 mark. So, we decided to put our favorite grocery stores (and our general grocery shopping mindsets) to the test.

We sent five R29 staffers to five mainstream markets with a $20 bill. The rules? To buy as much food as they possibly could, and to interpret that directive however they saw fit. We ultimately wanted to find out which store seemed to result in the most bang for that 20 spot and to see if walking in the door with a specific amount changed the way our participants shopped. Ahead, see what they bought and how they felt about the overall experience.

Why did you buy your specific items?

I bought my specific items for a kale and sausage pizza with roasted shallots and ricotta — and for dessert, some vanilla soy ice cream and chocolate biscotti.

Did you have a game plan going in or was it spontaneous?

I went in with the mindset that I was going to buy all the ingredients for a meal (dinner and dessert). The "most food" for me meant either feeding a couple of my friends for a fun/tasty evening, or making something for myself that would produce leftovers for the remainder of the week.

Do you normally grocery shop according to a budget?

I never go into my weekly grocery trips with budget in mind, but instead with meal plans (i.e. Monday night I'll make a kale and sausage pizza, Wednesday night I'll cook up an arugula, farro, and grilled chicken salad). I've perfected certain dishes for weekday planning that I never spend more than between $20-$30 per week on ingredients.

Did going with a price limit change the way you shopped?

Yes. I had to be mindful of cheese expenses! I had really wanted to purchase a block of parmesan for finishing off my pizza, but that would have put me over a couple of bucks.

Why did you buy your specific items?

I try to buy items based on versatility — how many different dishes can I make with it, and how long will it last?

Canned tomatoes: I try to find these on sale whenever possible, since fresh tomatoes aren't always in season. I think this was on sale for $2, and I will normally use canned whole tomatoes as a base for pasta sauces, minestrone soup, or shakshuka.

Chicken: I normally don't buy protein on a weekly basis. I go in before I'm making dinner, see what's on sale, and buy it if I feel like it. The chicken was a really good deal though, and can be used in soup, or as a protein dish. Even better, the bones can be boiled in a stock, which I like to keep in my freezer. I ended up freezing some of the chicken legs, too, because I didn't want it to go bad!

Onions: I use onions in almost anything, sautéing them for flavor. Two onions can last me at least a week and a half through a variety of dishes.

Bell Pepper: Ditto on the bell pepper — but they're always really expensive at Whole Foods!

Avocado: I grew up in California and used to have an avocado tree in my backyard, so I love avocados and can't really let the luxury go. Plus, they're great for toast, with eggs, or on top of any burrito bowls.

Mushrooms: Same — can be used for omelettes, in pasta, soups, salads, etc.

Pasta: Dried pasta has a longer shelf life and is a pantry staple.

Eggs: Cheap protein. Also, if I ever run out of other food I can always make egg salad for lunch.

Did you have a game plan going in or was it spontaneous?

It was mostly spontaneous. I shopped like I normally shop, which takes into account what I normally cook and what ingredients I'm comfortable with, as well as what is on sale at the time. The Whole Foods app is super helpful for that usually, but there weren't any good sales or coupons that day. The chicken was the only real spontaneous thing, but considering it seems to be an Everyday Deal (as the package says!) I should probably start incorporating that purchase a little more often.

Do you normally grocery shop according to a budget?

No, not really. I do keep price in mind a lot, and always shop sales, but I rarely spend time weighing my produce and calculating how much it will be. I typically average around $20 to $30 in groceries for every trip, because I'm just shopping for myself. If I'm shopping for dinner for me and my boyfriend, it's likely that I go over budget — partially because I've never quite figured out how much he eats compared to me, and partially because we both have expensive taste and I feel more comfortable splurging on meals together instead of meals by myself.

Did going with a price limit change the way you shopped?

Yes. I normally don't do math and trust that I'm naturally going to fall within my normal budget. The price limit made me measure the weight of my produce and do the mental math for how much the total would be — which was a little bit more annoying than normal.

Why did you buy your specific items?

I chose healthy ingredients that could be combined into different meals/snacks with little to no preparation, especially because I knew I would be eating them at my office. They are things I consider yummy and eat on a pretty regular basis.

Did you have a game plan going in or was it spontaneous?

I wanted to choose ingredients I could use in more than one way (ex: hummus on turkey or with carrots). I tried to stay as close to my normal diet as possible.

My plan was to buy things that were multipurpose and healthy. I treated this exercise like I was shopping for a work week's worth of food, so that affected what I chose. I also wanted variety so I would not have to eat the same things all week.

Do you normally grocery shop according to a budget?

I try to limit my budget to $60 but don't keep track of what's in my cart. When I hit my limit, I'll have the cashier stop ringing up additional items.

Did going with a price limit change the way you shopped?

Definitely! I shopped more thoughtfully and could not give into the temptation of splurge buys.

Why did you buy your specific items? I bought my items because a lot of them were things I typically eat. The produce was also all on sale.

Did you have a game plan going in or was it spontaneous?

I went in with the intention of trying to make as many full meals as possible out of $20, but found myself zig-zagging all over the store, picking things up and putting them back down. Then I realized my best bet was to shop the way I normally would, for the foods I normally buy, but see if I could keep it under $20. It was fascinating to see how fast things added up, though.

Do you normally grocery shop according to a budget?

I am extremely budget conscious when I shop, but I rarely set my budget at $20. I usually have some variation of avocado for breakfast, and some sort of veggie/protein combo for lunch, so it was great to see that breakfast and lunch for a week can be done for $20.

Did going with a price limit change the way you shopped?

I had to be much more strategic and cut out any extraneous indulgences. I had picked up a juice that was only $1.39, and ultimately even that seemingly small expense didn't make the cut!

I was curious to see how much non-packaged, "whole" food I could buy with $20.

Did you have a game plan going in or was it spontaneous? Yes - use my money to buy fruits, veggies, a starch, and protein.

Do you normally grocery shop according to a budget?

No, but I should...

Did going with a price limit change the way you shopped? Absolutely! I didn't double up on anything and was confident that I'd actually use everything I bought before it spoiled.

The Most Insane Catfish Reveals Ever

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Well, it looks like Nev Schulman and Max Jacob haven't run out of mysteries to solve, because Season 6 of Catfish kicks off tonight on MTV at 8 p.m, with 20 new stories to share.

When it premiered in 2012, Catfish capitalized on the drama and deception surrounding online romance. Five years later, with people swiping left and right on their lunch breach, online dating has become a far more common beast. That said, the show’s signature combination of mortification, mixed-up identities, and hope is no less entertaining today than it was yesterday.

Join us as we relive some of the most cringeworthy reveals in Catfish ’s history. We’re talking confrontations on overgrown lawns in rundown towns, blubbering heartbreak in real time, and Nev’s self-satisfied smirk. Sometimes, when you go fishing for the truth, you catch a catfish.

Kya & Alyx

About once every few years, one of the couples on Catfish walk out toward the sunset together. After clearing away a whole lotta lies and deception, Kya and Alyx join the ranks of Catfish couples who end in a burst of flames. After meeting on a website called Vampire Freaks, Kya and Alyx fall in love — but aren’t quite telling the whole truth.

During their confrontation, Kya confesses that her profile photos were fake. Alyx one-ups this confession by saying that not only is he using fake photos, by he's actually Dani, a transgender man. Kya doesn’t mind. She forgives Dani, and off they go.

*A caveat: Dani and Kya broke up soon after the episode aired.

Jasmine & Mike

Catfish is a show chock-full of uncomfortable revelations, but this reveal was particularly brutal.

Jasmine, a young single mother, thinks she’s found the perfect mate in Mike, a fellow single parent. After two years of talking, Jasmine enlists the help of Nev and Max to make contact with Mike. Unfortunately for Jasmine, it turns out that Mike’s not real. To make matters worse, he’s the brainchild of her ex-boyfriend’s current girlfriend, Mhissy. In a soap opera twist, Mhissy admits that she’d created the fake Facebook account just so she could watch Jasmine crumble. Now that’s some evil villain stuff.

Cassie & Steve

This is a case of good intentions gone awry. Remember, people: If you’re ever planning on catfishing your friend for their own good, think again! After Cassie’s father is brutally murdered in 2010, she processes her grief through alcohol and fast living. Her friend, Gladys, takes matters into her own hands to ensure Cassie doesn't “screw up [her] life forever” and get knocked up. So, playing the hero, Gladys creates a fake Facebook profile of an aspiring Atlanta rapper named Steven Gomez (alias: S-KILLA). Gladys even enlists her musician cousin to make a fake album, and talk to her on the phone pretending to be Steven. Cassie and S-KILLA actually get engaged.

How Gladys kept up the lie even after Nev and Max show up is beyond us. The episode ends with Cassie stating that she and Gladys will stay friends.

Artis & Jeff

There’s nothing like watching lives crumble in real time. And with such fireworks! Artis dumps his girlfriend and leaves their three kids to meet Jess, the woman he’s been dating online. But Jess isn’t Jess. Jess is Jeff, a young man who claims he’d been catfishing Artis to give him a lesson that cheating is immoral.

In a heated interview with Nev, Jeff tiptoes out of the closet and admits he might be interested in Artis romantically.

Whitney & Bre

Buckle in, because things are about to get meta. Nev and Max are called in to help Whitney meet the L.A.-based exotic dancer she’s been dating for four years. Whitney claims they haven’t ever video-chatted due to lack of Wi-Fi. While doing their usual snooping, the hosts discover that the couple had been video chatting all along. Unable to afford plane tickets, the keen strategists decided to use the TV show as a last-ditch way to meet in person. Kind souls that they are, Nev and Max fly Whitney out to meet Bre, anyway.

Courtesy of MTV

Antwane & Tony

Ah, another revenge stunt. Pretending to be a pal, Carmen agrees to help her cousin Antwane track down the identity of his online beau of three years, Tony. It turns out that Carmen IS Tony. Ever since Antwane called her “fat-ass Kelly Price” in front of all their friends, Carmen had been plotting her revenge.

This Architect Turned An Abandoned Cement Factory Into A Dreamy Modern Castle

In 1973, architect Ricardo Bofill found an abandoned, World War I-era cement factory outside of Barcelona. "I found enormous silos, a tall smokestack, four kilometers of underground tunnels, and machine rooms in good shape," he said in a statement. "I already imagined future spaces and noticed that the different aesthetic and plastic tendencies that had developed since World War I were present in this factory."

In the time since, he and his staff have transformed La Fábrica into a spectacular modern castle. They laced the exterior with lush greenery, and turned the inside into a living and work space where Bofill's home and studio are now located. The structure is still a work in progress, Bofill says.

If you find yourself in northern Spain, the castle is definitely worth visiting. You can wander through the gardens, view the exhibition space, and take plenty of artsy photos. But for now, you can check out photos of La Fábrica, ahead.

Well, allow us to satisfy your curiosity: It appears there's a chance Tiffany may follow in the footsteps of her older siblings Donald Jr., Eric, and Ivanka, by joining the family business.

According to Bloomberg, Tiffany was present at the opening of the Trump International Hotel & Tower Vancouver on Tuesday.

The sighting was somewhat unusual, as Washington Post reporter Amy Brittain pointed out.

She tweeted, "Surprised to see Tiffany Trump here at the launch of the Trump hotel in Vancouver. She has no official role in the Trump Org."

While that is currently true, it seems like it's only a matter of time before Tiffany does take on an official role.

During the event, Donald Jr., who along with his brother Eric replaced their father as head of the Trump Organization after the election, hinted at the possibility that his younger sister will eventually join her siblings.

“Tiffany, soon to be within the organization, always great to have you with us,” he said, though he didn't elaborate further.

Still, it may be a while before we see Tiffany occupying an office at Trump Tower. Amanda Miller, spokeswoman for the Trump Organization, offered this emailed statement to Bloomberg:

"While there are no immediate plans for Tiffany to join the company as she is currently applying to law school, the family looks forward to her potentially joining the business in the future if she chooses."

Tiffany, the only child from the president's marriage to Marla Maples, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania last May. Will she end up choosing to join the family business after law school? We'll just have to wait and see.

What Is An Infrared Sauna, Anyway?

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

If you follow any smattering of wellness influencers on Instagram, chances are you've seen at least one photo of someone sitting in an infrared sauna — it's sort of hot right now. The main difference between an infrared sauna and the regular ones you see at the gym is that infrared saunas use infrared lamps to heat your body from the inside out, and traditional saunas just heat the air.

There are a few trendy boutique infrared saunas in New York City — Higher DOSE, Gravity, and DTX Cellular Evolution — where you can go and sit in a small room and sweat for between $35 to $60. Some hot yoga studios use the same infrared heaters to heat their studios, and there are even portable infrared saunas that you can buy to use in the comfort of your own home.

Infrared saunas might be easier to handle, because they're actually gentler, says Katie Kaps, one of the co-founders of Higher DOSE. "Unlike traditional hot rock or steam saunas, which operate at well in excess of 200°F, infrared heat has the benefit of being effective at a more comfortable operating temperature of 100° to 150°F." Kaps compares the feeling to being in the sun on a hot day.

The claimed benefits of using infrared saunas range from helping chronic pain, to improving your mood, fixing your skin, and even making you feel high. Luckily, there has been some research on people who use infrared saunas, so the claims aren't all anecdotal.

Okay, but is an infrared sauna safe? "Using a far infrared sauna is extremely safe," says Svetlana Kogan, MD, a doctor who focuses on holistic medicine ("far" refers to where the infrared waves fall on the light spectrum). "But whenever heat therapy is involved, you cannot do it with pregnant women, people with pacemakers or battery-operated or electric devices, or patients on an insulin pump."

Here are some of the benefits that might actually be legit:

It helps your heart.

"Sitting or laying in an infrared sauna can increase your heart rate," Dr. Kogan says. Kaps says this can feel like a light jog, which releases endorphins like exercise does. A review of studies about infrared sauna use found that there's a little evidence that infrared saunas can be effective for people with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and congestive heart failure. So, it can get your blood flowing, and put stress on your heart that "conditions" it in a way, but it won't necessarily help prevent or cure heart diseases.

It can soothe chronic pain.

Last year, Lady Gaga posted an Instagram of herself inside her personal infrared sauna, and said she uses it to help her chronic pain. One small study on hospitalized patients with chronic pain found that people who used a far infrared sauna daily for four weeks were able to go back to work sooner and sleep better than those who tried a different therapy program.

I was so overwhelmed by the empathy, confessions & personal stories of chronic pain in response to my previous post I thought what the hell. Maybe I should just share some of my personal remedies I've acquired over the past five years. Everyone's body and condition is different U should consult w ure Dr. but what the heck here we go! When my body goes into a spasm one thing I find really helps is infrared sauna. I've invested in one. They come in a large box form as well as a low coffin-like form and even some like electric blankets! You can also look around your community for a infrared sauna parlor or homeopathic center that has one. I combine this treatment with marley silver emergency blankets (seen in the photo) that trap in the heat and are very cheap, reusable and effective for detox as well as weight loss! In order to not overheat my system and cause more inflammation i follow this with either a VERY cold bath, ice bath (if u can stand it, it's worth it) or the most environmentally savvy way is to keep many reusable cold packs in the freezer ( or frozen peas' n carrots'!) and pack them around the body in all areas of pain. Hope this helps some of you, it helps me to keep doing my passion, job and the things I love even on days when I feel like I can't get out of bed. Love you and thank you for all your positive messages.

A post shared by xoxo, Joanne (@ladygaga) on

It makes you a little happier.

Kaps says dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins (that's where the acronym DOSE in Higher DOSE comes from) are all released during an infrared sauna session, from the infrared lights and just knowing you're doing something good for yourself. At Higher DOSE, they let you listen to your own music and encourage taking selfies to make it a real experience. Dr. Kogan suspects the infrared lights could have a positive "healing effect," but that hasn't actually been studied. "How this happens is unknown, because no one has been able to measure the actual levels of serotonin or cortisol before and after treatments," she says. One study confirmed that heat makes people feel relaxed. Bottom line: You don't have to go to an infrared sauna to relax and feel happy, but it just might tide you over until it's warm out again.

NYC Schools Made A Huge Step To Support Girls In Education

Kimberley Shannon has arguably one of the world's most feminist jobs, and it's amazing.

Shannon started four months ago, at the tail end of a terrible year, as the new Gender Equity Coordinator for New York City public schools, reports Amy Zimmer for DNAinfo. Yep, that's exactly what it sounds like. She's there as a support system for girls in NYC, to even the playing field when it comes to women's access to education.

As Gender Equity Coordinator, Shannon will focus on gender-based violence, resources for pregnant students or students who already have children, and helping girls have more access to science, engineering, technology, and math classes among other things.

She'll also be a resource for gender non-conforming and transgender students, which is incredibly important now that Trump's administration has lifted what few rights transgender students had.

“The greatest need for my role is focusing on the most marginalized populations. That’s something we’re committed to at the DOE,” Shannon told DNAinfo. “I’ve been really moved at how many organizations and schools are eager to work with me.”

She's doing that already, by teaming up with kids in middle and high school from NYC's Healthy Relationship Training Academy, which helps students understand what a good relationship looks like and also provides support for transgender students, pregnant students, LGBTQ students, and student in violent relationships. Shannon is working with the peer educators from this program to create a training program for school guidance counselors and social workers about domestic violence, according to DNAinfo.

“The peer educators do great work in schools and connect with students on a deep level,” Shannon told DNAinfo. “We talked not only about emotional abuse but also technological abuse. That’s why it’s important to bring in the peer educators. Things are evolving every day with how technology is used.”

NYC schools have already seen great things from Shannon and we hope other states take note. Students everywhere would benefit from having someone like her in their corner.

What Should Nicki Minaj Do In The Aftermath Of "ShETHER"?

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

According to the title sequence of The First 48, the chances of solving a murder are chopped in half if there isn’t a lead within the first 48 hours. If we consider Remy Ma’s recent assassination of Nicki Minaj’s ego, reputation, and character in "ShETHER," it's safe to say that Remy may very well get away with this. As of Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at 12:45 p.m., Nicki has still yet to release her own response. It’s a pretty grim situation for the head Barbie in charge. The rap fandom is now left to pick up the pieces and wonder what’s next for Nicki and how Azealia Banks might be involved.

The general consensus from those both inside and outside the rap industry is that Nicki has missed the window of opportunity to redeem herself from the no-holds-barred track that Remy Ma dropped over the weekend. Minaj's ex-boyfriend and former ghostwriter Safaree told TMZ that "ShETHER" is one of the most disrespectful records he’s ever heard, and insinuated that Nicki couldn’t dream up a suitable retort if she wanted to. He also made it clear that he wouldn’t help her if she tried — talk about burned bridges.

There is also new evidence in the case to suggest that this was perhaps an unnecessary act of lyrical violence. There are some who believe that Nicki Minaj’s verse on Gucci Mane’s “Make Love,” which provoked the wrath of Remy, was actually a dig at Azealia Banks. Banks, who never misses an opportunity to be in some mess, as my granny would say, has since inserted herself into the conversation. [Eye roll]

There are a lot of moving pieces in this stage of the Nicki Minaj vs. Remy Ma beef. Aside from the two contenders and Azealia, there are no fewer than five other people who have been dragged into the fold: Ebro, Trey Songz, Gucci Mane, Meek Mill, Lil Wayne, Safaree and now Charlamagne. As such, I intentionally waited for the dust to settle before laying out some possible next steps for Nicki, which are as follows.

Make a proper dis record in response.

Cons: I have to agree with the general public that going toe-to-toe with Remy with a dis record of her own isn’t going to accomplish much. It’s too late. And, honestly, truly, what can she say? Fans have already predicted that the only ammunition Nicki has against Remy is a bigger net worth and more album sales, but I’ve already discussed why that won’t work. This is about skill only.

Pros: At least she'd have gone down fighting.

“Cash me outside. How bow dat?”

Pros: If Nicki took the street route and made physical threats against Remy or challenged her to a proper street fight, it would help mend the blow to her street credit.

Cons: Remy was just released from prison for shooting someone. I wouldn’t take that gamble.

Make an Azealia Banks dis track, instead.

Pros: We need a proper Azealia Banks dis record, and Nicki is more than capable of delivering. It could also clarify her intentions on “Make Love” and prompt Remy to issue a peace offering so that Nicki won’t have to address the slanderous claims made in "ShETHER."

Cons: Redirecting her anger toward Azealia might seem childish given the size of the elephant in the room. Nicki has already been criticized for taking to Instagram and Twitter to call out her ex-boyfriend Meek Mill, and other celebrities whom Remy mentions, for not defending her. It reeked of misdirected butt hurtness.

Address the media directly.

Cons: This is a rap battle. You don’t win by talking about the rhymes. You win by spitting them. Get off of the blogs and in the booth, Nicki!

Pros: Nicki shines during interviews and in candid moments when she gets personal. She is creative enough to use a moment like this to change public perception of her, Remy, and "ShETHER."

Call Olivia Pope.

Pros: It’s handled.

Cons: Olivia Pope is a fictional character.

Well, Nicki. What’s it going to be?

These Leggings Make Me Feel Like Kim Kardashian

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

I am not a person who wears leggings as pants — or a person who wears leggings at all, really. On any given day, I'm in jeans or trousers, even when I'm trying to be "comfortable" and "casual." On a plane, maybe I'll opt for joggers, and sure, I'll wear workout pants to actually work out. But, I haven't really considered leggings to be part of my everyday wardrobe...until now. I've finally stumbled across a pair that's changed my mind — and while I can't believe I'm even saying this, they make me feel like Kim Kardashian.

Allow me to explain. Who else wears leggings as well as Kim K.? While I'm not someone who typically looks to her for style inspiration, it's difficult to deny that she (and her sisters) make stretch pants look damn good. So good, in fact, that these Kardashian-style outfits are now being seen on the likes of street style star Miroslava Duma. And once Outdoor Voices' "Studio Skin" leggings came into my life, I felt like I, too, could hop on this bandwagon.

Really, it all has to do with the pants' fit, fabric, and construction. They're made from a seamless Nylon the brand describes as "form-enhancing" and "high density," which hugs your curves in all the right places and is totally, completely opaque. They're super high-waisted (which I also love), and the seamless construction means they're smooth as can be. This past weekend, I wore them to brunch (something I tend to dress up for), and I didn't feel sloppy at all. With an oversized hoodie and a bomber jacket, I felt so Kim K. — in the best way. Plus, I was able to hit up my pilates class afterwards without having to bring along a change of clothes (pictured below, I'm on the right).

Basically, I'm here to say that I now totally understand the infatuation. Somehow, leggings really can be pants — all it took was the perfect pair. Let's just say this discovery will be giving my jeans a long-overdue break. Thanks for the inspiration, Kimmy.

How To Try Kim Kardashian's At-Home Workout

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Kim Kardashian West's new workout plan is the one thing in the Kardashian world you can probably afford: It's jumping rope.

Follow any of the sisters on Snapchat, and you're probably acquainted with their daily workout routines, usually involving Bosu balls, stretchy bands, lots of butt exercises, just as many selfies, and a (presumably pricey) trainer.

Unlike personal training sessions or trendy classes, jump ropes are super cheap and accessible; they're like $10 a pop, and that one piece of equipment is literally all you need. Some ropes have bells and whistles, like weighted ropes or handles, but to start you just need one that's lightweight and has an adjustable size so you can fit it to your height.

If you find most cardio boring and hard (which it totally can be), jump-roping's simplicity and effectiveness will surprise you — just a minute of jumping rope gets your heart rate up and actually makes you think about what you're doing with your body. In the Snap of Kim's jump-roping, she tells the camera, "You guys, I did an impressive jump rope move that made them excited. Now they can’t do it! Something I can do that they can’t!" Kimberly, you are impressive, but we're about to catch up with you. Ahead, some jump rope workouts anyone can do, plus a few tricks to add to your arsenal.

Figure out how to jump.

If you haven't touched a jump rope since elementary school, start without the rope and figure out the coordination of jumping first. It might feel wonky, but this video breaks it down.

Just walk.

Sustained jumping can take a lot out of you, so take breaks and just march in place, or use this as a warmup.

Try one foot at a time.

A "jogging" jump is a little easier than a two-footed hop, because you have more time before the rope comes down. It's a great way to work your way up to full-on jumping.

Do short sessions.

The beauty of jump-roping is that you only need a few minutes, tops. And it's especially important to keep sessions brief when you're first starting out. Start with 30 seconds of jumping, and add toe taps like this when you want to take it up a notch — don't worry about speed at first, this video is fast.

Use your music.

Catching the rhythm when you're jumpin' jumpin' will motivate you to find a steady pace, plus it makes jump-roping feel easier. Oh, and it's fun.

Add some bounce.

These five moves have more steps than just straight jumping, so it might be easier for you to find your rhythm and flow. The regular bounce, boxer skip, run in place, and high knees start at about the one-minute mark.

Mix it up.

Once you feel comfortable jumping with two feet, try lateral jumps, half-jacks, skiers, and high knees (starts around the 2-minute mark). These moves are still on two feet, but will keep things from getting boring.

This Woman Is Speaking Out About Breast-Feeding Dangers After Her Baby's Death

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Though breast-feeding may have multiple benefits for both mom and baby, it's not without its dangers. One woman is opening up about her son's death on what would have been his 5th birthday, and warning others about what can happen when breast isn't necessarily best.

"I wanted to share for a long time about what happened to Landon, but I always feared what others would say and how I’d be judged," Jillian Johnson wrote in a blog post for Fed Is Best. "I share his story in hopes that no other family ever experiences the loss that we have."

Johnson explained that as she prepared to have a baby, "every class and book was geared toward breastfeeding and how it’s so important if you want a healthy child." She and her husband even made sure that their son, Landon, was born in a "baby-friendly hospital, which was geared towards breastfeeding."

After he was born via emergency c-section, Landon was exclusively breast-fed, and although lactation consultants said that "he had a great latch and was doing fine," one noted that Johnson may have been having trouble producing milk, citing her PCOS as a cause. But after hospital staff evaluated her risk factor for milk production problems, they had Landon continue to exclusively breast-feed even though he would cry unless he was on his mother's breast. (Doctors told her that this was called "cluster feeding.")

"I trusted my doctors and nurses to help me through this—even more so since I was pretty heavily medicated from my emergency C-section and this was my first baby," she wrote.

In just 53 hours, Landon had lost 9.72% of his birth weight, but doctors discharged him from the hospital after three days and told Johnson to keep breast-feeding.

"So we took him home... not knowing that after less than 12 hours home with us, he would have gone into cardiac arrest caused by dehydration," she wrote.

After getting home, Landon fell asleep while cluster feeding and became unresponsive. And after 15 days on life support, he passed away.

Christie del Castillo-Hegyi, MD, an emergency physician with a background in newborn brain injury research at Brown University, weighed in on Johnson's post, explaining that Landon had shown two signs of newborn starvation that doctors should have noticed.

"If a child is receiving a fraction of their caloric requirement through early exclusive breastfeeding, they can experience severe hunger and thirst, which is why they will cry inconsolably and breastfeed continuously when it is the only source of calories and fluid they are offered," she wrote.

Five years later, Johnson is sharing her story to warn others that breast-feeding comes with its own set of dangers.

"The best advice I was given by one of his NICU doctors while he was on life support is sure breast is best, but follow with the bottle," she wrote. "This way you know your baby has eaten enough… if only I could go back in time."

Michelle Obama Surprises High School Students With Secret Visit

SAUL LOEB/AFP/Getty Images

The words “high school assembly” aren’t usually synonymous with “the most exciting day ever,” but there are exceptions to every rule. Case in point — former First Lady Michelle Obama made a surprise visit to Ballou STAY High School in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday and it was presumably an experience that students will remember for the rest of their lives.

The school’s staff and students were told that Tuesday’s visitor would be Antwan Wilson, the new chancellor of D.C. public schools. Imagine their surprise and elation when Obama strolled into the room instead. (No disrespect to Wilson, of course — it’s a universally-known fact that competing with Michelle Obama is an impossible feat.)

During her visit, Obama spent over an hour meeting privately with 14 students to discuss the importance of higher education and finding their passions, according to her press office.

"The discussion was emotional and heartfelt. Mrs. Obama answered the students' questions and urged them to stick with their education. There were tears, laughs, and lots of hugs," a spokesperson for Obama's team told Refinery29.

To the delight of millions of Americans who are suffering from serious separation anxiety, the Obama family recently returned from a well-deserved vacation. Last week, Barack and Malia had a father-daughter dinner and theater date in New York City while Michelle settled into her new life as a private citizen and hit up a SoulCycle class in D.C. The former First Lady’s visit to Ballou STAY marks her first semi-official outing since the family moved out of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue last month.

During her tenure as First Lady, Obama spearheaded the Reach Higher initiative that encouraged students to pursue higher education after earning their high school diplomas. As her visit to this high school proves, she’s eager to continue the push.

And a pep talk from Michelle Obama about education (or any other topic) basically sounds like the stuff of dreams.

Editor's note: This story has been updated with comment from Michelle Obama's team.

I Ate Justin Bieber's Favorite Foods In Honor Of His Birthday

Justin Bieber rose to fame in the late 2000's, when he was still a baby-faced tween, and I was a slightly-less-baby-faced college student. I was immune to his puppy dog charms, and generally regarded him with indifference.

That is, until the release of his 2015 album, Purpose. I suddenly found myself a late-blooming Belieber (as did, apparently, a bunch of 20-something dudes who liked EDM). Suddenly, the shaggy-haired crooner of "One Less Lonely Girl" was a still-pretty-baby-faced but also really-tattooed kind-of-adult. It was confusing and exhilarating, a feeling I imagine bro-liebers felt as they jammed out to "What Do You Mean" while pounding jägerbombs.

As I played catchup learning about the man responsible for the near-constant earworm of "Sorry" looping in my head, I discovered that literally everything he does is noteworthy. The minutiae of his life, from what he likes to eat for breakfast all the way to what he would eat for his last meal, are all available online. And, especially when you look at the foods he loves, a pattern starts to emerge. Put succinctly, the guy doesn't have fancy tastes. Or, really, for that matter, the tastes of an adult. Could I get better insight to who he was by eating his favorite foods? In honor of his 23rd birthday, I tried to find out.

Tim Horton's

For the uninitiated, Tim Horton's is basically the Dunkin' Donuts of Canada (a statement that I'm sure will get me hate mail from fans of both restaurants). It's a well-known fact that Justin Bieber likes Tim Horton's, because every time he visits, it's a national incident.

But does he really like Tim Horton's? Way back in the early days of his Instagram account, he occasionally would celebrate his love, but, aside from visiting, he's been fairly mute on the issue in recent years. Is visiting Tim Horton's kind of a patriotic duty? Does he actually like it, or does he know that, in order to stay in favor with his fellow countrymen, he must tithe and drink their frozen coffee drinks while there? I sought a stateside Tim Horton's of my own to find out.

On my way to work one morning, I made a pitstop in Penn Station. Basically the opposite of all things Canadian (nice, maple-soaked, covered by universal healthcare), Penn Station is a failure of 1960s urban design. A dark, confusing, mostly underground maze of trains, subways, and human misery, it's also the location of one of Manhattan's two Tim Horton's.

I bought a coffee and their signature TimBits, which are doughnut holes but far punier. I'm not a fancy coffee drinks person (black coffee just seems like the quickest way to pour, consume, and caffeinate), but I enjoyed my cup. The TimBits, of which I got an assortment, were surprisingly soft and fresh-tasting. I imagine that if, I, too, grew up in the frozen lands of Canada, I'd feel similarly devoted to Tim Horton's wares. Because nothing says "home" like the fast food products you can only get there.

Next, it was time for a real breakfast, and it's pretty easy to figure out what, at least according to the internet, that would be. Cereal! Justin Bieber loves cereal! How do we know this? He once tweeted that he liked it. He was once photographed holding a box of Cap'n Crunch. He once Instagrammed a truly unsettling video of him laughing and eating a bowl of it, too.

The evidence seemed pretty irrefutable, so I poured myself a bowl of Crunch Berries and dug in.

I hadn't had Cap'n Crunch in two decades, easily, and was shocked by how good it was. It reminded me of the heady days of early elementary school, where my mom was so desperate to get us out the door and fed in time for school she'd indulge our demands for sugary cereals. It still sliced up the roof of my mouth, but the slightly styrofoamy-y, sweet morsels certainly blew my normal green smoothie or overnight oats out of the water.

Spaghetti Bolognese

Justin Bieber has proclaimed his love of spaghetti bolognese as recently as March of last year, making it a pretty indisputable bit of Bieber canon. What is it that he loves so much about it? Does he even know?

He loves it so much that he even once ate it before a show with milk, a combo that proved toxic enough to make him later barf on stage.

The idea of a cold glass of milk served with anything besides fresh cookies truly disgusted me to my core, but, nevertheless, I poured a big cup and got to eating. Spaghetti bolognese is a classic, but washed down with dairy? Why?!

There is something childlike about drinking milk with your meal. I hated milk growing up, and I always remember the tentative sips of milk I would take at friend's houses when their parents each gave us giant glasses at dinner. These days, my relationship with all things lactose can be best described as "it's complicated," so the idea of now swigging down milk with a meat sauce was even more repulsive.

Afterwards, I felt like I was going to barf, and I didn't even have to serenade an auditorium full of people with "One Less Lonely Girl."

Sour Patch Kids

When you're famous, your fans want to constantly give you things you love, even if you are perfectly capable of acquiring it yourself. I imagine this is the celebrity equivalent of how my friends tag me in Facebook videos about unlikely animal friendships.

Of course, no one has ever thrown a chimpanzee holding a kitten at my head, which is (sort of) what happened to Justin Bieber when a fan turned a box of Sour Patch kids into a projectile at his head.

No one at work volunteered to throw Sour Patch kids at me, so I just ate them normally, like a non-famous person. Like always, they provided that nearly-adrenaline-inducing rush of sour, followed by sweet. It was hard to eat just one... or two.... or 10.

A coworker spied my snacking and asked to try one, since she hadn't had them in ten years. After biting down, she emitted a blissful sigh, said "This was just what I needed," and left for home.

I was beginning to observe a pattern in Bieber's favorite foods: a kind of comforting sameness and familiarity, a lot of childhood favorites. Is it because he rocketed to the public eye at such a young age, freezing some of his quirks and preferences? Is it because he travels so frequently, the sometimes bland familiarity of the commercially-available and mass-produced is a comfort? Does he just really, really like refined sugars and milk?

It was time for my last (and greatest) challenge — dinner at T.G.I. Friday's. Would I finally know then?

T.G.I. Friday's

In a tell-all with Oprah on such light topics as fame and loneliness, we also learned that Bieber's favorite restaurant is non other than T.G.I. Friday's. At least one person I relayed this information to was skeptical: Maybe, she said, he was just saying this to be relatable to his fans. To which I said, you don't lie to Oprah.

Remember the Million Little Pieces guy? Do you remember anything he's done in the past ten years?

Exactly.

It was time to go to Friday's and see what I could learn.

Like Cap'n Crunch and big glasses of milk, Friday's is inexorably linked to my childhood. Descending into the Financial District's underground location, I felt like I was traveling back in time: the antique signs, brass banisters, and faux-Tiffany stained glass was all there. As was the appetizer platter that I blame for my lifelong love affair with mozzarella sticks: a combo platter of wings, potato skins, and fried cheese.

Here, sadly, my nostalgia failed to live up to the experience. Both the wings and the mozzarella sticks had been retooled in the last 10 or so years, The cheese filling on the sticks tasted like a cheese blend and lacked the pleasant snap of truly good mozzarella sticks. The buffalo wings were now boneless. It was disorienting, like viewing my childhood through a kaleidoscope or watching someone talk upside down.

As a kid, my go-to order was two hotdogs, one order of fries (always a budding gourmand!), but, since I was neither offered a kid's menu or able to bring myself to ask for one, I opted for a burger. Biting down on it, I was suddenly awash with memories of every chain restaurant burger I ate in my youth. Maybe it was just the flavor of well-done, over-seared beef, but I suddenly flashed back to some 15 years of eating burgers and fries. But, rather than the rush of nostalgia that I felt when eating a bowl of sugary cereal, I mostly felt defeated. This was not a good trip down memory lane, it was a sad reminder of how often I ate mostly tasteless food because it was comfortable and readily available. If I had stopped trying new foods at 18, my favorite meals would probably look a lot like Justin Bieber's, too. And I'm so glad they don't.

As to any lofty conclusions about what it all means for Bieber that he loves these food? After Friday's, I was bloated with sodium but no wisdom. I had followed the tidbits of information like so many breadcrumbs through the forest and only gotten more lost. I'm mostly impressed that his preferred diet of simple sugars leaves him with the energy to perform world tours. But I also suspect that, given his ability to reinvent himself, he could be enjoying a Michelin-starred restaurant meal of foie gras and caviar for his birthday. In which case, I am sure his fans won't be lobbing those foods at him anytime soon.

Deck Of Scarlet Just Launched Its Best YouTuber Collab Palette Yet (EXCLUSIVE)

When palette subscription service Deck of Scarlet launched last year, it was a welcome addition to the at-home beauty box category. That's because this first-of-its-kind, bi-monthly delivery service made it easy to recreate your favorite YouTube makeup tutorials IRL, using palette colors designed and curated by some of the video site's biggest stars. (Beauty vloggers Kelly Strack and Sonjdra Deluxe, for example, were among the first "Artist-in-Chiefs" for the brand.)

But even with all its wildly creative innovations, Deck of Scarlet's latest collaboration is its best yet. The cosmetics company announced today that it has teamed up with Evon Wahab — who has an impressive 1.7 million followers on Instagram and a cool one million subscribers on YouTube — and the colors she chose for her palette are killer. "I love the dark, sleek packaging, and inside, you basically have all you need: shadows, lip cremes, bronzer and highlighter," Wahab tells us exclusively. Then there are the cute shade names (like Coral Kisses, a zingy orange; Halo, a shimmery Champagne; and Mermaid, a shimmery teal-gray) and the pigment itself, which is ultra-fine, high intensity, and incredibly blendable.

On top of that, the beauty kit comes with a black eyeliner and a neutral lip liner. And just like with earlier launches, this special subscription delivery comes with step-by-step tutorials for multiple different looks and pro tips, like how to pull off that orange eyeshadow shade — all from the vlogger herself.

You can snag the new palette for $29.95 (shipping is free) — which is cheaper than many lipsticks you'd find at the department store — on the brand's website today. (But keep in mind that you do have to sign up for the service to get the product, though you can opt out any time.) Considering the fact that Deck of Scarlet's last YouTuber collab sold out before it even officially launched, we'd suggest acting fast.
