The Hilary Duff Movies That Captured The 2000s

Between 2000 and 2010, Hilary Duff appeared in over a dozen films. They include two made-for-television movies, one based on a TV show, and all the big-screen blockbusters you begged your parents to drive you to see.

Her massive screen résumé captures the overall vibe of being a teen in the early- and mid-2000s. It was a time of skinny scarves and newsboy hats. An era when regular flip phones were cool but Razrs were cooler. When a piece of teen entertainment wasn't complete without a Paris Hilton reference or, even better, a cameo.

Before you kick off the Hilary Duff retrospective you know you want to have, consider how the Duff canon preserves the culture of your youth. Someday cultural anthropologists are going to turn to The Lizzie McGuire Movie to understand young millennials. And they will get all the answers, set to the perfect soundtrack.

Cadet Kelly (2002)

Before military school quashed her creativity (at least fashion-wise), Kelly had the look all 2000s tweens aspired to copy. It was a little bit Hot Topic, a little bit Limited Too, and had more brightly colored hair accessories than you could fit in your big sister's Caboodle.

The Lizzie McGuire Movie (2003)

When Lizzie's little brother captured her most embarrassing moment and sent it to Good Morning America, he showcased a brand-new teen fear — public embarrassment on a national scale.

A Cinderella Story(2004)

This fairy tale starred the queen of mid-2000s TV (Duff), and the king — One Tree Hill 's Chad Michael Murray. It also put Duff among the ranks of fellow teen stars, like Mandy Moore and Lindsay Lohan, who provided songs for their films.

Raise Your Voice (2004)

The perfect "live your dream" movie for a time when everyone in America still cared about who won American Idol, and when every teen thought they were one audition away from musical stardom.

The Perfect Man (2005)

This film captured a time in online history when it made sense to catfish your mom by typing up love letters on your big shiny computer and snail-mailing them, without the fear she'd try to look up her secret admirer on Facebook.

Material Girls(2006)

When reality show fame was still new enough to be a curiosity of the moviegoing public, Duff and her real-life sister spent an hour and a half typing on bejeweled Sidekicks and reminding the audience what defined mid-2000s cool.
